Tapped into Craft, Libations and Victuals: Washington’s Porter from Alewerks Brewing: Williamsburg, VA
“Williamsburg AleWerks is located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Chuck Haines opened up this brewery in 2006 with the vision of bringing fine craft beer to back Williamsburg. These guys make a wide range of beers from IPA to Pumpkin to Milk Stouts. The beer that I’m sampling right now is called the Washington Porter. This is an English style porter being rich and malty with a nice chocolate backbone that finishes with a slight roasted malt flavor. This is a perfect winter beer that is not too heavy but with just the right amount of roasted malt flavor. Washington would be proud!”
“We tasted this on The Less Desirables recently and the roasted barley, caramel and chocolate flavors really popped against the roasted malt. It’s a good thickness, not too much, and just rich enough. It’s easy to drink and easy to drink a couple in one sitting. The 6.5% ABV provides good drinkability while not knocking you over because you should be a responsible drinker. It’s a fantastic brew to have in the winter months, but, I don’t discriminate my beer to seasons. Therefore, since porters are my favorite beer style, it’s a great year-round beer to me. Slàinte!”
